Кризис лояльности и оборона империи в оценках британского военного класса: колониальная армия в межвоенный период

Аннотация

В межвоенный период одновременно три мощных идеологических фактора – национализм, панисламизм и коммунизм – подтачивали власть метрополий на зависимых территориях. За этим фасадом, как полагали в Дели, Симле, Иерусалиме, Каире и Лондоне, скрывались враждебные интересы других государств. Заморские владения рассматривались одновременно как источники силы (экономика, международный авторитет) и слабости (отвлечение ресурсов в связи с убежденностью руководства в наличии эвентуальной внешней угрозы). В историографии Британской империи исследуется, как колониальные администрации и метрополия реагировали на вызовы, обусловленные перспективами соединения кризисов лояльности и обострения международной конкуренции в единую проблему обеспечения колониального порядка после Первой мировой войны. Открытым остается вопрос, как на эту угрозу смотрели сами представители военного класса. В статье показано, что в этой связи вопрос институционализации колониальной армии являлся одним из ключевых для армейской корпорации в рамках профессиональной дискуссии. В какой мере esprit de corps британской армии имел имперский характер с точки зрения ее администрирования и публичной презентации? Воспринималась ли колониальная служба как приоритетная по отношению к участию в конвенциональном конфликте при подготовке офицерского корпуса? Как предполагалось решать проблему роста обязательств армии по подавлению антиколониальных протестов (в том числе в форме полномасштабной партизанской войны) на фоне обострения международных отношений, финансового дефицита и кадрового голода? В какой мере логика развития военного мышления и корпоративные интересы отражали эволюцию моделей колониального управления после Первой мировой войны? Как показывают результаты представленного исследования, эти вопросы не только конституировали внутри- и межведомственные дискуссии по указанной теме. Их участники оказывали влияние на трансформацию более широкого дискурсивного поля, в рамках которого обсуждались перспективы развития Британской империи как таковой.
